Dr Schalk Du Toit grew up in Humansdorp and matriculated at Nico Malan High School. He completed his basic medical training at the University of the Free State, after which training in eye surgery took him to 3 different provinces in South Africa. He was fortunate enough to have worked in high volume cataract units in the past, as well as excellent academic centres such as Tygerberg Ophthalmology Department (University of Stellenbosch).
Career highlights include winning the Geoff Howes Medal for best candidate in Diploma of Ophthalmology (2010), and the Justin Van Selm Medal for best ophthalmology board examination candidate (2015). He has published academic work both locally and internationally, and has presented papers at South African Ophthalmology congresses in the past. He completed his ophthalmology training Cum Laude at the University of Stellenbosch before relocating with his family to Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth).
As a comprehensive ophthalmologist, he has special interest in glaucoma, cataracts and retina conditions. He has extensive surgical experience, having done more than 2500 cataract procedures among many others. Current research interests include retinal surgery for retinal detachments, macular holes and epiretinal membranes as well as glaucoma stents and different injections for macular degeneration patient and diabetics.
Dr Du Toit prides himself on ethical practice, ensuring that the patients’ needs always come first. In difficult current circumstances in private health care, where over-servicing of patients often occur, this practice is built on strong moral principles. The practice strives to provide cutting edge ophthalmic services, reflected in the state of the art equipment used in the practice.
